To contribute to the profession of optometry and enhance patient care by recognizing excellence and achievement in doctors of optometry performing laser and surgical procedures to the highest level of care.
The American Academy of Optometry Medicine and Surgery (AAOMS) was founded in 2023 by 12 of the leading optometrists across the United States who perform laser procedures, injections, and surgical procedures. As of March 2024, optometrists in 12 states are performing laser procedures, and in 18 states are performing injections and surgical procedures. Optometry continues to provide expert care in the areas of lasers, injections, and surgical procedures and recognition of this excellence is needed. Excellence is demonstrated through patient care outcomes and performing procedures beyond entry level requirements. The AAOMS is an organization open to any eyecare provider/contributor across the world who has demonstrated excellence and achievement in laser procedures, injections and surgical procedures. Fellowship can be obtained in the AAOMS by providing and showcasing excellence and achievement through patient care and procedures performed. These procedures include, but are not limited to, YAG laser capsulotomy, laser peripheral iridotomy, laser trabeculoplasty, injections, surgical procedures including eyelid lesion removals, biopsies, eyelid procedures, corneal crosslinking, among others.
Fellowship (FAAOMS) in the AAOMS is achieved through meeting the requirements set forth as follows:
- Completing a high level training course as approved by the AAOMS Board AND
- Having performed laser and/or surgical procedures in a clinical setting on actual patients AND
- Having support of two individuals performing laser and/or surgical procedures, one of which must
be a current member of the AAOMS AND - Submitting documentation and proof of the following procedures performed:
a. YAG capsulotomy – 6 OR
b. Laser peripheral iridotomy – 5 OR
c. Laser trabeculoplasty – 5 OR
d. Lesion removal from the eyelid/adnexa – 4 - Submission of the initial application fee ($225)

Following the submission of application, and verification of the requirements by the AAOMS application
committee, the applicant will be required to sit for and pass a virtual or in person oral examination defending
their submitted work and application. Following successful passage of the oral examination, the fellowship in
the American Academy of Optometric Medicine and Surgery (FAAOMS) will be granted.
Annual renewal fee of $100 is required to sustain annual ongoing membership of the AAOMS.
